Washington, D.C. has always been the subject of extensive urban planning. Despite this continuity, though, these planning efforts have varied greatly depending on their historical era. From the Federal Period to the "City Beautiful" movement and even up to contemporary "revitalization" efforts, these urban planning initiatives demonstrate disparate variations on a common theme. This site provides an overview of urban design projects in Washington, D.C. from its conception during the writing of the United States Constitution to recent developments in the nation's capital such as the design of the capital area's subway system.
